I find the above photographic narrative (because this really is a narrative -- a film in stills, if you will) nothing short of magical. While viewing it, you are transported backwards in time to the real Golden Age of Film, the silent era, the days when Hollywood(land) was where Koreatown is now (I would know, I live in an apartment that once belonged to Mary Pickford!), when Charles Chaplin had the power and clout that the entire Disney industry does now, when -- as Norma Desmond so eloquently put it in Sunset Boulevard -- actors "didn't need dialogue; we had FACES." While viewing the photographs, you're watching Buster Keaton with Theda Bara, Louise Brooks, and Clara Bow in turn. You're seeing overly-stylized sets, which create more of a picture book feel on film than a photographic one. And the fashion... oh the hair and clothing and painted-on makeup!! To die, to die, and wake in a dream where women once again walk around like works of art, and men stroll the streets looking dapper in suits and caps.

Well, on that note, I'm off to go day dream the day away ♥

The photos below are but a few glimpses into the world of Bright Star. The heroine, Fanny Brawne, is a 19th century Erin Fetherston; she finds release from the limits placed upon women by crafting frothy, everyday fairy princess confections for herself, complete with artful ruffles and pintucks, and utilizing color in a way rarely seen at that time.

And some more stills, just because.

The love letters in the film, are all real letters written by Keats (he had ordered all of Fanny's letters to him burned upon his death, so I assume that her letters back to him were Jane Campion's own imaginings) and are among the most beautiful of all his writing. It makes me long for the time when love letters were as prevalent as booty-call texts are today, and nostalgic for all epistolary relationships in general. There is nothing like crafting and receiving hand written mail... and I hope that the art of it will matriculate back into common practice. My hope is that there will be a second coming of the Romantic era of art and literature -- as the original was a backlash against technology and the Machine Age to begin with, and do we not have even more technology to rebel against today?

Let's bring back letter writing. Buy yourself -- or better yet, make yourself -- some beautiful stationary today and write a letter to someone you love. Tomorrow is Valentine's day after all, so is it not a most appropriate season for such things?

Put on a pretty dress, pick up a pen, and look out the window. Or climb a tree. Or do it all.

And most of all, of course, go Watch. Bright. Star. NOW.

This weekend past, as previously alluded to, we staged a little champagne-brunch photo shoot gathering at our studio in Downtown Los Angeles. While much of the day was spent attempting to detangle The Mystery of the Lights (we're still working those out)and drinking, we did manage to get some items photographed for the shop, as well as have a generally wonderouslovely time. We were thrilled to meet two wonderful l'il ladies we'd been previously acquainted with only through Twitter and blogs, Rodellee of Adore Vintage and T'ai Rising-Moore of Awkward Beauty. (They're both wildly talented and fabulous, so do make doubly-triply sure to check out their websites.) Our new model, JJ, and a couple of our other friends were present as well, and we all fell madcappedly in love whilst supping upon miniature croissants and sipping mimosas with fresh berries mixed therein. T'ai was kind enough to take the lovely little snapshots above, which offer a teensy peek into our sunshiney Rococoland world. (I am so especially proud of my bookcase at the mo'!)

After all but the beautiful JJ and I remained, we continued to get far beyond madcappedly drunk, and decided to play around with the lights some more. A few images from the result of this liquor and noir combo can be witnessed below... we think perhaps photo shoots and drunkenness are not such a bad mix... or at least make for some fun the next day when you say to yourself, Where did these come from? whilst looking at your camera. What do you think?

Hmm... now it would seem in keeping with this post to send you off into the world to drink and be merry but... would it be bad to promote drunkenness to you all? Perhaps I shall tell you to... seek out some revelry or to create your own today... whatever that means to you ;) NEVER DRIVE DRUNK. There, that's my good deed. xxo!

Now I thought I would share one of my very favorite fairy tales with you... I've copied it word-for-word from The Yellow Fairy Book, edited by Andrew Lang, and this particular story is derived from Germanic folklore (I personally think that German and Russian fairy tales are the absolute best... probably because they're the darkest.)

I find myself musing over what might happen should the East and West coasts e'er meet...

Today you should make some paper snowflakes, be sure to drink some cocoa, and slip into the satin-lined-world of a beautiful coat... whether you live in the chill or in the (comparatively) warm.

We have decided to delay our second shoot until Saturday, so that we may have both our models to play with simultaneously (now, doesn't that sound naughty,) and so that we will have time to expand the gathering into an all-day champagne brunch photo shoot dress up fest with friends. (Yay!!)
Today, armed with my queerly juvenile daylong angst and my stir crazy mind, I decided to clean. I suppose that, beyond the angst, I decided to clean because... well... my apartment was beginning to look like an episode of vintage-themed Hoarders and... well... although we all know that Einstein once said, "If a cluttered desk signs a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?"... a mess can grow to such a point where (despite being an obvious manifestation of my personal genius, in this case) enough is enough and... well... to summarize, I cleaned.
While taking care of my apartment -- a portion of it, anyway -- I thought, Why not organize my computer desktop while I'm at it? Which I did, and so well, in fact, that I'm still rather stunned at the empty expanse before me. After that, and in order to delay finishing the dishes, I thought, Why not design myself a new desktop wallpaper while I'm at it? Which, I did, and so well, in fact, that I've decided to share it with you. (At least I like it... and I hope you will, too.)
The dimensions aren't perfect, but I have the image centered on my desktop, and for me it works perfectly. You may prefer to tile it (should you decide to use it at all - natch) or resize it or or or, etc. etc. etc. You can download the full-sized copy here.
I hope you all had fantastic, wonderful, exciting days... you know, like mine... was. Defeated sigh (with a giant grain of salt ;)

And you know, I think this old(ish) spread of Christina Ricci from Pop Magazine is probably one of my very favorites she's done. Although, thinking back, that little lady has been in some truly incredible spreads. Maybe it's just my favorite one she's been in since... probably the 90's. Oh wow... next time I'm in Boston I think it's high time I go riffling through my childhood mag stacks (yes, I was one of those nine year-olds reading W while their sneakered feet dangled above the floor on the T. (for those NOT from Boston, T=subway)) Anyways, here are a few other images from the shoot.

The Valentino Spring 2010 ready to wear collection sends us spiraling backwards down a rabbit hole into the dankest swamp of dank. We tip toe across stepping stones, between the reeds, beneath a boisterous murder of crows. We reach our fingers toward the milky silver skies and grin. Here, in The Swamp of Childhood Fascination, reside all manner of silver and magical things. This fact may be easily forgotten, but childhood can be a terrifying place... only, in the best of all possible ways. This collection is all fairies and dryads and naiads and night. It's a narrative of Victorian little girls with huge dark eyes and the dreams they dream of fantastical things in their high away rooms with their pale-faced governess who hungers for her Rochester. This is how we see it, at least: a dream of light from out of dark. And oh god, the shoes. The shoes the shoes the shoes. Be still my madly beating heart, The Shoes.

What do they remind you of?

Which brings us to... if you have not seen Pan's Labyrinth... oh dear, darling, get thee to Netflix! This film is the absolute in fairy tales for grownups (but really, what fairy tales aren't for grownups?) It is gruesome and frightening and lovely and lush. And the musical composition... breathtaking. The lullaby theme is perhaps the most haunting strain of a melody ever written... ever. If you disagree, please, let us know what you find more heartbreaking than this. We'd love to hear it... secret inner goths that we are.

p.s. The Valentino shoes in the center bottom row also remind us of those giant black goldfish they have in fountains at a lot of shopping malls n' things... anybody else? No? :/

Oh, Bowie. Bowie Bowie Bowie Bowie Bowie. How to tell you how you've rocked our world? How you shaped both our musical taste and the early glimmering glimpses of our personal (and global) sense of style? How many times we have scrawled "Bowie Wowie Mix" across the silver surface of a blank CD? The ferocious crush we had on Jareth, the dashing Elf King, at the tender age of 3? (Yes, darling, you were influencing our romantic development even then!) How in high school, we destroyed both our VHS, and later, our DVD, of Velvet Goldmine, that fictionalized testament to you at the pinnacle of all your staggering glory, from far too many repeat viewings? That the photograph of you leaning so rakishly against the Manchester Square gate, reading that newspaper and dangling that cigarette, still gives us the boner to end all lady boners? Oh, sigh. Oh, heart be still. Oh, David.

We had a wonderlovely impromtu shopping excursion just the other day... coffee, croissant, pitter patter pitter patter, bookstore pop-in, pitter patter, oh look it's our favorite thrift shoppe, let's stop in for just a mo' to say hello, pitter patter... and came away from it with three of the most amazing coats, and THE most amazing cape. This week was poor luck for photo shoots, the first one being canceled due to a light malfunction, and the second to our model being sick. We will be staging a nuclear explosion of a shoot on Tuesday... however, we couldn't wait to share these recent finds with you, so we thought we would post a few preview photos. It's impossible to perceive their real specialness just on hangers (and under the glare of a flash... sorry about that!) and we're absolutely DYING to get them photographed on one of our girls. And hopefully nothing else will go wrong because... if we don't get these beauties posted - and fast! - we're not sure we'll be able to let them go!

It's a New Year (as if you didn't know) and although it is a couple days late... or rather, a few... I thought that on this day of dusky light, on an unexpectedly languorous morning (strobe malfunction... photo shoot delay, sigh oh sigh) I would compose a list. Of course, I've only twenty so far, and I'm sure I'll continually be thinking of more and more, but this is a start.

2010 will largely be about cleaning out the old and ushering in the new, both literally and figuratively... (trite? yes. true? ne'er-the-less)... And of course, I'll do my utmost to be better about maintaining the bloggity blog ;)

Our shoot for the Dujour Magazine ad the other day did not go exactly as planned... suffice it to say, we ended up with only fifteen minutes of actual shooting time, on the only tiny splash of unoccupied grass in a park before a concert. This was a true blue exercise in gorilla photography technique and resourcefulness. We still intend to undertake a larger-scale photo shoot with the same or similar styling at some point in time, but we are pleased with what we were able to create under such dire strains.
